To address the rule of law crisis, Europeans must see it as a broader crisis of governance.
The word corruption means two things: gaining financial advantage by abusing trust, and degrading something of value. These two meanings are linked not just in etymology but in reality. Europe should be lucid about how threats to its values as a democracy ruled by law are of a piece with attacks on the fairness and efficiency of its economy.
