Just like the two galaxies, two worthy causes – combatting transnational bribery and protecting personal data – have been on a collision course for some time. However, unlike the predicted Milky Way-Andromeda encounter, we do not have to wait long to witness the clash between the requirements of international anti-bribery laws and those of personal data protection laws. The first effects of this may be seen in May 2018, when the enforcement of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will have arrived.
