You might say that this is a dual-use phenomenon.

Here’s what that means. In particular, there is a rising dilemma confronting the field of AI due to the stark realization of a dual-use AI conundrum that is becoming increasingly evident. The idea is shockingly simple. You can potentially take an AI system that was devised with the utmost purity toward societally beneficial ideals and goals and with nary more than a flip of a switch turn that AI into a dreadful nightmare facing humanity.

That’s considered “dual-use” because the AI can be designed for goodness and yet the next moment it can be readily switched over into abject terror.
