FIFA corruption trial ends with closing arguments: ‘They have a theory that everyone in soccer is dirty’

NEW YORK—The FIFA trial ended Thursday, culminating a month long saga in federal court in Brooklyn that involved money-laundering experts, secret audio recordings and the testimony of an American pop star as U.S. prosecutors laid out charges of corruption rarely, if ever, seen in global sports. “You’ve seen a lot of paper, some of it quite complex,” Samuel Nitze, an assistant U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, told the 12 jurors while urging them to find three former South American sports officials guilty. Days earlier, one juror was dismissed and replaced with an alternate after falling asleep.
